Thats a really good write up Tommy. I will be adopting some of that next week, pre-paint.

re: punch comment below - perhaps I was a bit vague, I wasn't suggested a punch is used to wallop a painted grp bonnet with a hammer, move that its gently tapped so the tip is used to puncture the masking tape to ensure the drill bit goes in exactly the right place. Have done this many times on delicate surfaces where there is no second chance.

Another option is to use a drill guide, very similar to the one linked here :

But with a dense foam glued to the side in contact with the paint & cleaned after each hole is drilled. The foam will prevent the guide slipping, but it can be awkward to place in exactly the right place.  Not too sure if I'd be keen on using a centre punch to mark the holes as suggested below.

Consider using M5 or M4 stainless steel button head cap screws secured with nyloc nuts in place of rivets as any hammering to fix the rivets could potentially mar the paint. From any sort of distance, they'll look just like a rivet.

Suggest:
masking tape,
brand new 1mm drill bit
a sharp punch that can be tapped
a stencil to make sure they go in the right place first time.

Your post reminded me of a TV ad from the early 00s for Nuts magazine I think: young woman with a drill trying to drill a hole for a radio arial, skimming the spinning bit across the top of the wing 'Women: Don't you know Thursday is Nuts day'... always made me laugh. Wouldnt be allowed that now mind.

Hi all   Has anyone drilled and fitted Bonnet Rivets after paint .?
 I want to fit them now but it's the paint I'm frightened off damaging.
Any one help. Please .
