If you are using a Lucas style coil, strongly consider a resin filled one. Some of the fluid filled ones don't like being mounted horizontally and suffer from heat build up. Mine is a Viper coil and it has never missed a beat.

I'm looking at mounting the coil for my Ford V8 within the engine bay. I'm wondering where others have put theirs? Close to the distributor or as far away as possible? Ive read that it can cause interference to the spark if not sited correctly.

I originally had my coil mounted on the inner wing. Problem was it was too close to the headers, so heat from the big block headers eventually fried it, and of course it gave up in an awkward position  - in the middle of a roundabout The replacement is now mounted vertically in front of the cylinder head so it gets the breeze over the engine when at speed, and is well away from exhaust header heat. Seems to be OK.
