I'd also recommend checking all the earth connections and battery terminals before replacing any parts. A loose or corroded connection can cause some really confusing electrical issues, and it's an easy thing to rule out first.

I wonder what happened to the original repaired chassis? Would this have a greater claim to the original VIN if it was built into another car? Begs the question how much of the original car has to be incorporated into a rebuilt car to justify claiming it's the same  vehicle? Sounds like "Triggers broom" to me!  ;D
