Brake Disc surface rust built up over winter

If they have light contamination I would use brake cleaner and rages trying not to spread the rust dust every where. I have used wire wool with brake cleaner on heavy rust discs.
Another option is use a rust and metal wheel cleaner which you spray on and leave for a short time then wash off.
Bilt Hamber wheel cleaner or korrosol iron & fallout remover.
You can also use a spray on protection before your car goes into storage for the winter period. I highly recommend you look at Bilt Hamber as this where they started in rust protection and removals.   

Update: yes it was brake cleaner that I used, not brake fluid, sorry for the incorrect post earlier!

That was my intended plan but knew that this was likely to have been an issue for others and maybe other options had been used. MOT due next month so giving it some TLC beforehand.

Had this last year, Was advised to jack up car and use brake cleaner and a rag with a gloved hand to rub off superficial brown surface coat. Think I used a brillo pad for stubborn bits.

What is the best method to clean up the surface rust on brake discs having been unused for many months.
Not happy to just apply the brakes and grind the debris into the disc.
