General Cobra Discussion / Re: Which car ramp?
Last post by RussHowell - May 20, 2025, 04:03 PM
Hello,

Quickjacks are pretty good and I show their use in one of my videos.
They work well with a £50 battery charger unit from Halfords.

They lift to two positions fine and are just about light enough to shove out of the way when you want to move the car or even lean against a wall if you can be bothered to undo the pipes etc

Thanks
Russ

Latest milestone achieved. Transmission is in! Doubt I made guide pins and doubt I could have done it alone without them. My clutch alignment tool worked perfectly as everything slid in nicely although there was a bit of wiggling to keep things moving.

Cheapie alignment tool: https://www.amazon.ca/Mearo-Alignment-Automotive-Replacement-Accessories/dp/B0CS94H3K4/ref=sr_1_5?crid=OUO1Y0HB42OX&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.gg-QrynWkkmIc-izKny9HC5d8Ejc7qUFg_Bq8v_jbob7lTjtPbtp3vEw-g_bd_C20QFyc2CPbMkBy5UPKVjnX0A-aqT-k5KRCsgTqYnCvCPIZpbJg8rFRb0_E69RQaNpoejUJsDynDcaRKJrzi-9_2i-NIInHhEfSm_sk5aXnBWoV4bHaJoAa2wAs-V_1PZufkk5Cxnd2tIqLSYYnOTzSXXxrITZI4TNcUx7SeKLJRryql3gXiaCXi-E4LRzgEu3pJeSNZpzKDNmBnlpRMRS5XL-lc54VYjmB0tpXbCdTbo.lwHCNh5p2hbH5CmZx1DN2vV5_jSzLKcaBWmeqFWkgo4&dib_tag=se&keywords=mearo+clutch+alignment+tool&qid=1747739977&sprefix=%2Caps%2C116&sr=8-5

Finally got enough bolts in that I could put a board across the lift ramps and put a scissor jack on it to support the transmission tail-shaft. That allowed me to remove the hydraulic cart and gave me more room to work.

I still have some bolts to put in, put the mounts in, install the slave cylinder, shift cables, and hook up the reverse light switch. May be more, but I forget right now.

I know from removing the transmission that the two top bolts are more easily accessed through the engine hatch cover.

This was a big step and brings me so much closer to start up.

ps: another tool that worked great even though I had my doubts and thought it might slip: https://www.amazon.ca/ECSiNG-Flywheel-Locking-Compatible-Automobile/dp/B0CJ2DTBNV/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1B06OIM3NT2Z8&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.SsmUWhI2yjwJbNKmCYdHPWkwfgX2Wn4dXinNZ-7vBoPJsRKUNCScVSRVy1gUEVEMJ99cEEbMpiweLfKB9b8ssfDk7Whud028gbZtasAPIgAlrs9XLexlHuJCEa3t6w7pUWzP4V_u3Rlb2fzEra-Z7JjP-6AR-aZIn7UqpJiE8D1X1CAd1DhEfyNWU8cD5e5OJuByYK5v61shssUkFv7narzP9rKPhTl1q7DZg2td2yRb5UJgrbdJShuOxt-ehJhkQTkzdSqbrAlC7asvrZw4mV0stUbEEearbHII0VcgdDQ.fjS6HKRzH48ujO61Pgcu3j8PonxaNcoWbyt_y8ZlbZc&dib_tag=se&keywords=ECSiNG+Car+Flywheel+Timing+Tool&qid=1747740232&s=automotive&sprefix=ecsing+car+flywheel+timing+tool%2Cautomotive%2C93&sr=1-5

General Cobra Discussion / Which car ramp?
Last post by Rob4141 - May 19, 2025, 12:48 PM
What car ramps to people recommend for their home garage occasional use?  I have seen some basic triangular - drive onto car ramps with hydraulic lifting jack (2000kg), for under £200, and think these would do the job, however they state max tyre width of 225 which won't work with the rears.

Thanks in advance for recommendations  :)

Hi Kev, Wasn't obvious to me when I just looked? Is it buried under another post?
Stuart Clarke was the other person who has a lot of Hawk knowledge. Very nice guy.

it's the usual pre IVA problem can't drive it anywhere to get it properly set up and can't justify transport costs.

#KevW I have posted on the 289 Register too thanks.

I'll see if I locate a set of old school tracking sticks locally.
Or maybe a piece of string. LOL!

Hi Steve, just seen this post. I will be going with the North West Kit Car Owners Group it's a group that i run on Fbook we will have a stand within the circuit with 40 kits going in Cobras, 7s GT40s etc. This was all booked and arranged by me and is our 4th visit. I can ask if you can join us on the pitch, but I would need to know what sort of ticket access you have, the reason is we all get allocated parking zone badges for our pitch. If we can get this to work you are more than welcome to join us on our pitch. Trev.

Chang Lim at Thunder Road cars carried out my set up for my Southern Roadcraft a good few years ago now,
I am still more than happy with how he set it, no bump steer or excessive tyre ware etc .
As this was pre I v a am not sure it would comply ?
I have the set up figures that I used to get things going at the time before Chang did his final tweaks,
If you want these figures, just let my know I will be happy to dig them out .

Could be just some minor adjustment with toe-in. To much toe-out can give feeling of dead spot in the centre. If your spot on with Gerry's figures you should not be off. Its obviously not a worn component if all new but new can have play on U/J worth a check.
I would also try adjust your tyre pressures down 2psi at a time and see how it feels.

"Like" because you're back on it, not because you've got a problem  ;D

I would think it is most likely to be something geo related, so insufficient castor, excessive toe (in or out), and least likely camber? Or a bind in the steering somewhere but I assume you'd feel that as the driver.

No PAS, I presume?
