Quote from: GDCobra on Jan 12, 2024, 03:28 PMThanks for the feedback @MartBlak, I'm fairly sure I'll remain with the 225-215 sizes, I don't really see much point in increasing with the engine I have (3.9 RV8).  I would be interested in whatever feedback you get from GD though.

I see your tyres have quite high load rating (possibly due to width) but also your fronts are XL.  Is that necessary/desirable on a GD?
Sorry for the delay in responsing....I missed the thread being updated.
I have basically gone with as close as possible to the tyres the guy who built the car went with and got advice from Andy before searching for them. I cannot find the same tyres now though!
I cannot comment on the load rating as it is what it is for the tyres as far as I am concerned. I really do not stress the tyres too much as only very occasionally will be doing a track day!

Quote from: MartBlak on Jan 10, 2024, 01:23 PMI am running 16" wheels on my Jag based Mk3 with a 289 engine (4.7l) and the tyre options are not easy for my current configuration.
Front:    Toyo Proxes T1 Sport    225/55 ZR16 99Y XL
Rear:    Toyo Proxes T1-R    245/55 R16 100W

I have a problem of the rear wheels catching on the inner wheel arch and on the top of the outer when I put a spacer in.

According to Image Wheels the GD recommendation for 16" wheels is:
Fronts: 7.0/7.5"  x 16" with 215/55/16" Tyre
Rears:  8.0" x 16"  with 225/55/16" Tyre

I have tried 9" rear at the suggestion of Image as the thinking was the tyre wall would be supported better and may therefore give me a bit more clearance......it is still catching even though I have the shocks set as high as I can (which gives a too hard ride).

I have asked this specific question of Andy and am waiting for a response. I suspect it will be to go back to 225s in the rear. I am happy with the fronts at 225 and they do not catch.

Please let me know how you get on as I have to make some decisions of my own soon!

Quote from: JON1D on Jan 02, 2024, 11:02 AMI would look at BF Goodrich G-Force Sport Comp 2 . I have these on my Crendon and give great traction. Take a look at the various 16 size at North Hants.

I would look at 255/50 16 for rears if you have enough arch clearance and 225/50 16 fronts.

Quote from: richard8166 on Jan 02, 2024, 07:40 AMYes, those are the usual sizes if using 16 inch wheels. I don't have a specific brand recommendation, but don't get XL load rating as the cobra isn't that heavy! I think the load usual rating is 95 and 93 for these size tyres.

Thanks Richard, I was wondering about the load rating so I looked up some info on this yesterday, based on the weight of the car a load rating somewhere in the 80s should be sufficient which I don't think you could get on those tyre sizes as load rating seems to increase with tyre size.  I'm also guessing XL tyres will be heavier (contribuing to unsprung/rotational mass) and possibly stiffer so definitely out.

Thankd for the reply @JON1D, The 255 would be slightly higher profile than I currently have, only 4mm or so though and as I need to get my speedo recalibrated this wouldn't be an issue, it would be 15mm wider per side though which may give some issues with contacting the arches, I'd have to check.
Also not sure my wheels would accept an up size of 30mm on width, I'd have to also check the wheel width (probably should have done this before asking the question!).

The 225s on the front probablly wouldn't be too bad, I do already get some issues with the inner wall (slightly) rubbing the inner arch on full lock, I know I could probably tweak the rack to stop this but it's not that much of an issue.

Thanks for the North Hants recommendation.

Hi All

Just looking at sorting some tyres out for the GD Jag based MK-3, currently have 225/55 R16 Rear and 215/55 R16 front Pirelli tyres.
Are these typical/correct sizes and does anyone have any specific brands they'd recommend or perfer to avoid?
Car is 'only' a 3.9 RV8 so not massive power.
