If everyone used there real name we may have lots of john smiths so to have a nickname or 'handle' is an additional level of distinction.
Some people are protective of their privacy and may not want to give their real name and that should be fine also.

Tbh I don't see why there should be any privacy issues, although I can see plenty of opportunities/reasons for 'hiding' issues.

I think some people are well know to the group and use there knick names which I don't have an issue with as they usually put there names at the end of the post being curious.

Can it be made a rule of the forum that members have to post under their real names?
AK Brian, Ben 427 etc are fine but GD Driver and Ram man would not be.
I'm a member of several forums which insist on real names (you could even make one up!)
It's just common courtesy and really annoying when posters don't post under their names and then don't sign their name at the bottom of the post. It puts you off answering when you don't know who you're speaking to
