While tinkering under my AK while I had it up on my ramp, I thought I would check the clutch slave cylinder and free play, as my clutch bite is very low down on the pedal. Free play should be about 5mm from what I can gather in the road craft instructions.
Well I could not get 5mm, so I decided to adjust it, Um this just doesn't feel right, so I got out the trusty endoscope camera for my phone and had look at the thrust bearing. Either I'm missing trick, or the clutch fork is incorrectly installed, it looks to me like its pushing down on the outer face of the thrust bearing, when in fact, the lugs should be in the slot of the trust bearing, so that when the clutch is realsed the thrust bearing has 5mm of free play away from the pressure plate, to make sure its not constantly running on the pressure plate, and wearing out the thrust bearing prematurely. Photos of what I found.
The question is, can I slacken the rod and remove it, then pop the fork of the ball head, and try and get the fork correctly fitted in the slot on the thrust bearing, then re fit the rod and make the correct adjustment.
Or is it a gearbox out job. I'm just trying to work out the best way to do it or if its even possible with out removing the gearbox and bell housing.
Gearbox out will be far easier.
You can do it how you described but you may spend as much time as doing it with the box out.
