Title: Tyres on 18 inch rims
Post by: Resik on Jun 26, 2024, 08:58 AM
Hello,

I currently have Toyo tyres front and rear, type Proxes T1R.  Front 235/40/ZR18 and rear 295/35/ZR18. These are on a Dax DeDion with a Chevy LS3, suspension is by GAZ.

Only Toyo no longer has the same tread with the tyres they supply as the ones I have now.

If you were choosing tyres now which brand & type would you buy now? Which tyres do you have good experience with in terms of roadholding, driving characteristics and wear?

Regars,

Rocco

Absolutely only one choice for me when you're talking modern sizes - Michelin; ok, two choices: Michelin Pilot Sport 5 or Michelin Pilot Sport 4S..

However, while both are available in you front size, the only choice in rears that size is OE Porsche Pilot Sport 2 which are an old tread pattern and nearly £300 each. I'd consider dropping down to 295/30 and running Pilot Sport 4S both ends, personally, and adjust the speedo to suit.

If you'd rather keep the same sizes, Pilot Sport 2 are available in 235/40 (also OE Porsche) as well so you can match the sets.

I haven't run them on a Cobra but have on other cars - an E46 M3, E64 645ci and 650i and the daily 530d Touring - and friends have run them on many other cars (911s, a Gallardo, a Maserati, BMWs), longevity and handling are both great.

Hello,

thanks for the advice, just ordered the front tyres (Pilot Sport 4S).

How did you find the Toyo tyres?
I'm considering Toyo Proxes Sport for my 17" wheels - so much cheaper than the Michelin PS4 (can't get the PS4S in my size)

I have PS4S on my daily driver (VW Scirocco) and actually hate them! I know this is an uncommon opinion but they've ruined my car since switching to them.

I had Pilot Sport 4S on my daily driver and after 2 years they cracked. I changed to Goodyears and seemed a lot better all round.

Which Goodyears did you opt for?
