Title: Replacement throttle cable.
Post by: Dek on Aug 30, 2023, 06:27 PM
On the "old forum" there was a recommendation for a "super glide " throttle cable replacement. Anyone remember that?

This is the company many have used in the past and still going.
Speedy Cables used to be in London and moved to Wales many moons back. Very good for bi-spoke cables.
I am sure there were a few others

This company also was a well know company. Venhill Engineering Ltd of Dorking.

Thanks Jon for those recommendations. Look good. My outer braided cable is "puckering" up when the cable is tightened and is quite stiff.

You need direct route and not to many bends. If its getting snagged somewhere? I would pull the inner out ( if you have made ends then you might have to cut and remake an end) and see if any braid issues and then give a spray of GT85 see if it improves. A new cable with better internals might be your best solution.

You can take measurements and send photos of your cable ends too Speedy to make a cable if you don't want to send your cable off.

I think you're right there Jon. Unfortunately the throttle pedal is on the right obviously and the carb throttle arm on the left so can't avoid two bends. I will disconnect the cable as you suggest and see what the resistance is like.

I remember that thread - because I went and did it.  Absolute game changer.  No more stiff o sticky throttle cable.  Get a new inner cable too, and I got the end fittings and ferrules that I needed from Venhill as already mentioned. This is what I used, from McGill Motorsport.   Cost me £11.70.

Qty   Item name   SKU   Item net   Total net   Row total
2   AN-3 (3/16) Stainless Steel Braided PVC Coated Teflon Brake Hose - 1 metre   BK_HOSE_1m   £4.8750   £9.75   £11.70

It's teflon lined braided brake hose.

Glad someone remembered the original post. Teflon braided brake hose-ingenious! So the internal diameter of the hose is not too big then compared to the small diameter of the cable? Edit. Just seen on the link it's only 3mm. Where did you get your inner cable from? Same place?

I would be tempted at this kit or build it with the required ends you already might have and use.

https://www.venhill.co.uk/cables-and-components/car-cable-kits/1mt-car-throttle-kit-stst-braided-ven-ukcc-b1m.html

This kit O.D. is smaller 6mm and cable inner is 1.5mm with PTFE inner sleeve. A 3mm inner is quite a thick cable more for clutch where a higher breaking strain is required. A light action on a throttle body is all that is required on the carb spindle.

I most likely just ordered it from eBay or Amazon.  It's pretty standard stuff.  Car builder Solutions I expect would have a range of sizes too.  Glad to help.

This kit looks good.  My inner cable is also 1.5mm and is ideal.  If you think you'll use most or all of the kit and don't want to hunt out the parts you need individually, this kit will do nicely, for a few quid more.

Mines of an off road buggy thing.  ;D

Just happened to be the perfect length after the LHD to RHD swap.
