Title: Dax Mk111 front (Jaguar XJ) setup.

Morning.

I have recently stripped and rebuilt the front suspension on my 1985 Dax Mk111 (Jag XJ S2 front end). I have replaced all of the bushes with poly and now need to set up the suspension.

I have a camber/caster gauge and performed this when the car was first built, using the standard Jaguar setting figures and the car drove pretty well, with the exception of a bit of bump steer.

I will do the same again, unless anyone can give me some words of wisdom on the setup and particularly the order in which I should perform the setup.

My gut feel is;-

Ride height first. This should be OK as I have not adjusted the shocks, but I will check it.

Camber second. Again, all the same shims went back, but the bushes might have had a minor effect.

Caster third. This is probably a mile out as I failed to note how many shims were in the top ball joints.

Tracking last. I set this myself last time as no garage could fit their equipment between my tyres and the body, it's very low! things might have changed in the last 30 years and I will run round my local garages to see if they can do it. Failing this, I will set it myself.

Just looking for words of wisdom :O)

Caster & Camber first as they affect the height of the ball joint.
Bump steer next.
Tracking last.

Most of the tyre places now have the 4 wheel laser stuff with mirrors that just hang on the tyres.

Firstly make sure your happy with the tyre pressures with regards to bump steer .
A lot of bump steer on the Dax and SRv8 with xj front end with MG steering rack can cause issues on
these older style Cobs.
I have some figures for the the xj 2  front end for my SR if of any use, as the Daxs were similar,
just let me know and I will go and have a dig in my garage.

All good on pressure, been running 21PSI for years with even tyre wear.

It's the hanging on the tyres that seems to be the issue, I only have about 25mm from tyre shoulder to arch.

You should get a modern alignment system in that gap (something like the Hawker machines) - alternatively a trip to somewhere that works regularly on things that aren't run-of-the-mill grocery getters..

Both are used to Cobras (amongst other things - CG have done a friends 911, Gallardo and Audi S8).. budget an entire day and just north of £300, mind!

That's what's on my fronts, 22 PSI is max that I would go to and 22-23 for the rears .
The caster is 2 deg - 2 1/2 deg positive .
camber 1/4 deg - 3/4 deg negative .
Rear
camber1/4 deg - 3/4 deg negative
Toe in parallel is negative 1/32 '' .
