Title: Split rim Halibrand renovation
Post by: chris27_blue on Mar 31, 2026, 09:13 PM
Dont know anything about split rim wheels, and would like to refurb the (very nice) Halibrands I have. They are 17inch, faux spinners, widths prob 8J on front and 9J on rears.

The central hub area needs a colour change and have approached 3 or 4 places who have all declined re powder coating, with some saying they dont deal with split rims. One issue I can see is that there is 35 nuts and bolts on each wheel that would need removing and replacing.

Apparently if you remove all those to get at the central part to powder coat, putting back together the split rims can also cause air leaks if not sealed properly?

Can it by done DIY- does anyone have any advice?

Or does anyone know of somewhere in the Sussex preferable, or Kent/ Hampshire areas that might be interested to do the job.

TIA

Splitting them can be done at home.

Depending the type and style, if its just the centers that need doing you can let the air out and then undo the bolts if the centres are outside of the barrel and lip then they will separate easily.

You can then get them refurbished.

Some places will be a bit worried about them due to porosity of the aluminium casting, you may get small pin holes in the powder coat surface.

Thanks for the advice. Others have suggested it can be done. Will have a think, but nervousness creeps in.

Apparently there are 2 piece and 3 piece split rims, where the 3 piece need sealing
